The Ventura Youth Choir (VYC) is a community children's choir, open to singers age 8-13. We welcome students from within the community with a desire to sing in a group setting.
Our choir provides an opportunity for singers in grades 3-7 to develop vocal technique and musicianship skills in a fun, fast-paced, and challenging choral ensemble setting. Singers learn and perform a variety of musical genres and languages, make life long friends, and rehearse in a group music setting.
During our weekly rehearsals, singers are coached on correct posture, breath support, vowel placement, and tonal quality. Emphasis is on unison singing, partner songs, and two-part (treble 1 and 2) voicing.
In addition to performances in the community throughout the year, we also host two formal performances to showcase what has been learned.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a young person to expand their musical horizons, and experience the joy and excitement of performing in front of an audience. They will also gain a sense of community in our weekly rehearsals, as we work together and grow our choir.
The goal of the Ventura Youth Choir is for singers to develop a life-long love of singing, and to be able to share their joy of singing with others.
The Ventura Youth Choir averages approximately 50 singers per year and has been active for over 15 years. VYC has received high merits in Disney choral competitions, earning first place two years in a row. We have performed with international children's entertainers such as Norman Foote, Billye Jonas, and Beethoven's Wig.
Ventura Youth Choir performs regularly in the community, going into retirement homes during the holidays, and performing annually at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in downtown Ventura. VYC has participated in and hosted numerous choral festivals. We give concerts at City Hall, the Eco Festival, and have performed the National Anthem at a local sporting event. Each spring the VYC enjoys a vocal clinic with renowned conductor John Sutton, director of the Angeles Chorale.
To end our spring season most years, the VYC participates in a choir mini-tour, which has varied from Disneyland's Magic Music Days to performing in Universal City Walk.
